Winter riding is brilliant. Quiet roads or muddy trails; but it is tough on your shoes. Mud packs into the treads, road spray soaks the uppers and damp insides start to smell long before spring arrives.

The good news is that a few minutes of care after each ride keeps your shoes comfortable, fresh and ready for the next one. Here is how.

1. Deal with the mud straight away

It is tempting to kick your shoes off by the door and forget about them, but dried-on mud is far harder to shift than wet mud. Knock off the worst as soon as you get home, then reach for the Premium Bike Shoe Scrubber in our Premium Bike Shoe Care Kit. Its bristles get into tread patterns, around cleats and beneath closures where grime likes to hide.

2. Clean, don't just rinse

Water alone just moves the dirt around. The kit's Premium Bike Shoe Cleaner lifts grime from uppers and soles without compromising breathability. Work it in with the scrubber, then wipe the shoes down with the included Grey Microfibre Cloth, which lifts dirt without scratching the uppers.

3. Take the insoles out

Wet insoles trap moisture inside the shoe and slow drying right down. Pull them out after every wet ride, let them dry separately and you will notice the difference in both comfort and smell.

4. Dry them slowly, not on the radiator

Direct heat from a radiator, fire or tumble dryer can damage adhesives and warp uppers. Loosen the closures, open the shoes up and stuff them with newspaper to draw out moisture, then leave them somewhere warm and well ventilated. Swap the paper if it gets soaked.

5. Freshen the inside

Sweat plus wet socks plus a closed shoe is a recipe for odour. The kit's Foam Fresh is made for the inside of your shoes: spray it in and let it freshen the areas you cannot reach with the brush, so you are not dreading the Sunday club run.

6. Protect them before the next ride

Once your shoes are clean and still damp, spray on the kit's Premium Footwear Shield and let them air-dry naturally. It helps repel water and dirt without compromising breathability, so you face the next wet ride with less clean-up afterwards.

7. Check the moving parts

While your shoes are clean, take a quick look at cleat bolts, dials, ratchets and straps. Grit is the enemy of anything that moves, so wipe them clear and make sure everything is tight and working smoothly before you head back out.
